In the heart of Seoul, South Korea, lies a boutique hotel that challenges the conventional urban living experience. A Better Place (ABP) is a unique hospitality concept that seamlessly blends form and function, offering a fresh perspective on city stays. This hotel, designed by the South Korean studio Useful Workshop, is a testament to innovative design and thoughtful architecture.
Location and Vibe
ABP's central location in the trendy Sindang neighborhood provides easy access to both local life and tourist hotspots. The hotel is a short walk from Jungang Market, known for its Tteokbokki Town, where the famous jeukseok tteokbokki (table-cooked spicy rice cakes) originated. The second location, a serviced apartment in Jongno, is closer to major attractions like Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bukchon Village.
The Sindang location is housed in a discreet, slim five-floor building, occupying a corner address on an unassuming street. The design evokes a David Lynch movie aesthetic with red carpets, minty-green accents, plywood fittings, and angular aluminum end tables, creating a surprisingly zen atmosphere.
Service and Accommodation
The front-of-house team at ABP is a highlight, balancing efficiency with warmth. Two out of three staff members speak English, ensuring a smooth experience for international guests. Upon arrival, luggage is delivered to your room via a dedicated lift, accompanied by a complimentary tea or coffee, often a flat white, one of the best in the city.
Each of the four open-plan rooms is designed for two guests, featuring a mirrored hallway, compact kitchen-diner, living area, and bedroom. The rooms are equipped with modular shelves, hiding useful tools and utensils, and displaying curated objects like books by Han Kang in Pantone order. The living area includes a smart TV, and the bed has super-soft ABP-branded bedding and robes.
Room 201, my stay, featured a separate bathroom with twin sinks, a small bathtub, and a rainfall shower. The amenities included a Dyson hairdryer and Aesop shower products, ensuring a luxurious experience.
Food and Drink
The ABP Lounge offers floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the street, providing a great spot for people-watching. Guests receive 30% off the menu, which includes coffees, teas, snacks, and sandwiches. The cocktail bar offers an extensive selection of whiskeys, local beers, and curated wines, with a signature ABP Old Fashioned made with port.
There's no dinner menu, but a folder provides recommendations for nearby restaurants, organized in a matrix by type and distance, ensuring guests can easily find a variety of dining options.
Facilities and Accessibility
ABP lacks a spa or pool, but it has a rooftop lounge on the fifth floor with sweeping city views and a custom plywood communal kitchen. The hotel is not pet-friendly and is not well-suited for those with accessibility needs due to the lack of an elevator.
